4. Bulb types: LED, halogen and the rest
For almost every home use today, the answer is LED — and the choice is really just about which LED. Here is where the older technologies stand.
- LED (light-emitting diode): the modern standard. Uses around 80–90% less energy than incandescent, lasts 15,000–50,000 hours, runs cool and is available in every colour temperature, shape and fitting. There is virtually no reason to buy anything else for general lighting.
